My New Life as a Patriot
Okay boys and girls. Crystal has big news: The Black Hills Bandit is dead. Thus, I am no longer the assistant editor of the Black Hills Bandit.
I’m not homeless on the streets yet, but I am, sort of, without a job — well, without a job title or a job description anyway.
Thje Journal has decided that they will continue producing a weekly newspaper, the Patriot, that is tailored for the military crowd and I am completely in charge of it.
I haven’t decided if I like that yet. I like the work. I basically select the content and design an entire newspaper every week. That’s cool, but my most direct boss is the head of the ad department, so he can’t really help too much on content issues.
I’m actually starting to miss the days on the Collegian when I had a staff of my own. I want to assign stories and teach people how to use Quark and…well I don’t really want to be the only person working on this paper. It’s lonely.
I get to see Melanie (the future Mrs. Jeans) everyday now, and that’s good. But I don’t really think I should be in charge of an entire newspaper, no matter how insignificant — and believe me it is insignificant, at this juncture of my carreer.
I’m totally capable of doing the work, I just don’t have a lot of experience in the industry.
Plus, I didn’t get a raise and I’m now working fewer hours. That’s good news and bad news. I prefer working fewer hours, but I was barely making ends meet with all the overtime pay. Now, no overtime pay. Ish!
Plus, I don’t think it is going to take me an entire 40 hours to do this job after a while and my boss totally wants me to design ads with my extra time. It is a reasonable desire and assertion on his part. I mean I do technically work in the ad department, but it has become abundantly clear over the past year and a half that I am not a great ad designer and it would take a lot of work to become great at it.
I’d rather pursue something that I’m already almost great at — like writing, or decorating, or cooking. For those of you who have eatie my cooking and are currently thinking, she not that great of a cook all I have to say is: compared to my ad designing my cooking is art!
So, the basic thrust here is, I am no longer a Bandit, I am not the Patriot. No matter what that all means in the long run at least it sounds better.
If you’d like to check out the content of the paper you can visit it online at: http://www.blackhillspatriot.com
I don’t write for the paper I mostly design it, so the website doesn’t reflect my best work, but it will give you an idea of what I’m working on now — for those of you who are curious.
I also have to say, I know this is a rather boring Blog. I am currently takling suggestions for new Blog topics. I’d love to write about stuff you all care about! Let me know what you want to know!
