Flyer Way

February 16, 2010

So I design sales flyers in my new job. I think I’m good at it, and I like it…except for one thing. The sales staff is constantly asking me to print out more. Now, I PDF everything I design and put it in a place where they can get to it, but they still ask me to print out more – constantly.

Not to mention the fact that, I don’t normally mind being interrupted to printout more. At least I don’t mind too much. But this week I’m too busy to be interrupted every five minutes to print crap out. And, to top it all off, I just had a really frustrating conversation.

Here’s the set-up: I’m at my desk, typing an e-mail to the Senior News folks because it’s Senior News week and I need them to send me something.

“…print some flyers,” I hear coming from behind me. There’s no one in my eye line and no one has said my name. I’m a little confused but I think, “Sales Flyers, that probably means me.”

I imagine that the beginning of the sentence was something like, “Can you…” or maybe, “Can you, please, …” However, I am almost certain that my name wasn’t said and no one was in my eye line at all.

So, I’m shocked. I’m not quite sure whether I was being spoken to and the person who said it started walking past my desk like it was okay to just order me around and then walk away. (By the way, upon retrospect I think I should have just ignored her.)

“Wait,” I said. “What flyers did you need me to print out?”

“All of them,” she said. “We’re all out of all of them.”

“Um…they’re all on the N drive, you can print out anything you need,” I said.

“Oh, I know, but it’s just easier if they are already printed out.”

“Uh, okay,” I said…but I was thinking, “Easier for who? It’s easier for me if you print out the flyers that I have specifically made PDFs of and saved in a place where you have access to them – which by the way is specifically so that you can print them yourself.”

“Well,” I continued – in an admittedly curt tone, “I won’t have time to print any today.”

“That’s okay, just whenever you can,” she said.

“Then I will never print any out,” I thought. “Because I won’t have time to do that…ummmm, ever. Every other part of my job is more important than printing out flyers for you.”

Seriously, how helpless are people? Open the document, hit control P and then hit return. I don’t care how busy a salesperson is, if he or she is actually preparing for sales calls, he/she has time to print out the papers needed for the call.
