Who Made You King of Anything?

While on my lunch break I heard the song “King of Anything” by Sara Bareilles and now I want to sing it to a couple of people. One person in particular, in fact. (And almost every man I’ve dated lately.)

Of course that is just a silly, Glee-induced, karaoke nerd’s fantasy.

So, in lieu of telling someone off through song (while the masses cheer me on and back-up singers and dancers taunt the object of my ire) I will post the lyrics here.

Maybe the right person will get the point.

“King of Anything”
Sara Bareilles

Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Let me hold your crown, babe.

I think I need to buy that album.

So, are you feeling me ladies?

The lyrics that really struck me when I heard this song this afternoon (besides the chorus which is SO FREAKING TRUE) were: “I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning, there’s no one here to save.”

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of a man who is capable of protecting me. But honestly, I probably won’t need one to do so very often. I mean, I can swim.

Okay, I can dog paddle, but still.

(If given the chance, what song would you like to sing full-out into someone’s face?)

I like the lyrics. Some men get confused with helping versus controlling.

This is great, I’ve never heard this song. Hmmm…a song I’d like to sing in someone’s face… damn I can’t think of anything. You Oughta Know, Alanis Morisette comes to mind. But I don’t even have the energy to sing that to my ex. LOL

How about “I’m the Only One” by Melissa Ethridge? I have a few people I’d like to sing that to. Which is why I sing it at karaoke from time to time.

That is a little harsh isn’t it? What happened to damsels in distress? Some men need to save little kitties stuck in trees! I didn’t have to read all the lyrics to know which one struck you most ! You really made my day though!

Love it sister!!!! I am right now stuck on “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson, but that is more something I would love to sing sweetly to someone.

The song I would love to belt out as an Athem is “Telephone” by Lady Gaga or “Almost Lover” by a Fine Frenzy.

The drowning lyrics really caught my attention too because I dont need to be saved only protected.
